OUR TEAM
Katy and Shatra are the partners and engines of Morindoo. They have a decade's worth of experience as a team, having run the Mongol Derby together for many years prior to setting up Morindoo as well as running various projects. In that role, they mapped huge swathes of the country, met hundreds of herders and horse breeders, and interviewed, developed, and contracted dozens and dozens of the country's most talented event staff.
They also made Mongolia accessible to a hugely diverse and demanding set of customers in an extremely pressurised environment. At the same time they have engaged hundreds of Mongolian herders to deliver a highly sophisticated service without compromising their most beguiling habits of simple, authentic hospitality and goodwill towards strangers, particularly mounted ones. All of these skills and connections have borne fruit in creating Morindoo's signature adventures.
They are backed up by a highly talented crew members, who will become your trusted guides on our adventures.
Katy
Katy has been in charge of organizing some of the world's most ambitious adventures, as an event manager for the UK company The Adventurists from 2010-18. During that period she oversaw the development of the event and its growth into the commercial success it represents today.
She has guided horse treks in Mongolia and horse safaris in Malawi, East Africa, and represented her country in both dressage and endurance, sports she still competes in given the chance. She rode in the inaugural Mongol Derby in 2009 and was so dazzled by the experience that it has taken over her life ever since. She is also a keen biker, and a remedial class paramotor pilot.
Throughout her time working on various adventures around the world, Katy’s love affair with Mongolia stayed strong, and it is her quest to share her spiritual home and travel philosophy with others that led her to branch out and start her own company with Shatra. Morindoo is the result of that passion.
Shatra
Shatra is the head of the Mongolia branch for The Adventurists and The Equestrianists. She is the lynchpin in the vast Mongolian team working on various events and overseeing all logistical aspects of the events. Shatra has been involved from the very beginning for the inaugural Mongol derby and solved countless problems from the ground up to make the Derby the success that it is today. She personally travels to countryside to set up the course and maps the entire course for the Derby. Most crucially, Shatra finds and manages the families who provide their horses and homes during the race.
She has great Mongol-power; knows where to find it and how to nurture it. Shatra splits her time between Mongolia and USA. It is her knowledge of both countries and ability to straddle two cultures, and understand and interpret both faithfully, that sets her apart.
She is passionate about Mongolian traditions and culture. She is also the founder of a non-profit organization that has been set up to help herders and their animals, and slow the migration into cities.
